About Planters at Tamworth
Planters Tamworth started off selling Christmas tree’s from the back of a cart almost 25 years ago. The Garden Centre was soon built and year upon year Planters Tamworth has got bigger and better.
Over the years we have had celebrities from TV’s Coronation Street open new buildings, we’ve had Fred Elliot (John Savident), Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) and more recently Maria Connor (Samia Ghadie).
Planters Garden Centre is a family owned & run garden centre and has been trading since around 1990. We started as a fairly small centre and almost every year since the centre has grown, we have a licensed restaurant that was rebuilt in April 2015 seating around 320 people, the restaurant includes a vast outdoor seating area and fantastic play area which was fitted in May 2015, we stock most items that you can think of from clothes lines to dining room suites as well as all the plants you could ever wish for.
We extended our Pet department in January 2008 and our Aquatic Concession (Ripples Waterlife) in Spring 2009, in June 2012 we introduced a Sky Trail Adventure to our garden centre, in March 2016 we started a dog grooming centre within our pet department called Pooch Parlour.
Our staff are very important to us here at Planters and most of the team have been here for a good number of years, as we are regularly expanding. We are creating new vacancies all the time so if you are interested in joining our team have a look at the Vacancies page, we keep this as up to date as possible and details for applying are at the bottom of the page.

About Planters at Bretby
When I talk to the more senior residents of the area it’s really surprising, how many people remember our nursery and the history of this area.
The current site has certainly changed in appearance over the last 90 years.
The first nursery here specialised in growing ferns, over the years the ownership passed on to the Moore family who developed the business into a flourishing tomato nursery.
Around the time of the Second World War, the area was covered by over 8 acres of glass, and the company employed a staff of between 20 to 30 people, most of whom lived in cottages in nearby Bretby Lane. Records show that the Bretby Nursery was extremely successful, supplying the whole country and growing predominantly the Ailsa Craig variety of tomato.
The greenhouses were heated by hot water, with a couple of staff responsible for maintaining the heat from the large boiler, by feeding it coal from the local colliery.
With the increase of cheap, imported tomatoes, the Bretby site went in to decline, and the last tomato was grown here about 25 years ago.
Rebuilding for the future
Around 1985/6 David Cartwright purchased what can only be described as a derelict site, with only 2 greenhouses, one for growing and one used as a retail shop. Since then Bretby has seen major changes and developments, including a large retail area, a much improved and extended plant area and the introduction of the popular restaurant.
Bretby was purchased by our group in 2005 and became Planters at Bretby, and has since gone through
The Bretby philosophy to provide top quality plants is something we will maintain as we develop other aspects of the business and of course we will continue to offer our loyal Bretby customers a personal, friendly and knowledgeable service.
